Trapping Rates
The World Conservation Monitoring Center
indicates that the EU imported approximately
a million
birds per year from 2000-2003.
These are only the
CITES listed species, and we conservatively
estimate a similar number of non-CITES birds are
imported.
Although non-CITES
numbers are not tracked by the EU, we deem this
figure conservative based on birds available in
major exporting countries and on the ratio of
CITES:non-CITES birds in trade.
Finally, mortality
rates vary a great deal, but for this purpose we
set the figure at a relatively conservative 50%.
Thus, the per year calculation is as follows:
[(1 million CITES)
+ (1 million non-CITES)] x 2 for mortalities =
4 million birds per year trapped for the EU
market.
This figure
corresponds to a bird taken from the wild
roughly every 8 seconds. |
